Scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity and ranks among the common health problems that threaten the well-being of children and adolescents. In severe cases, it can damage the spinal cord and nerve roots, even leading to paralysis, cardiopulmonary dysfunction, and disorders affecting other organ systems. Spinal deformities in children and adolescents directly impact their studies, daily life, and employment prospects, thereby undermining the quality of talent cultivation in our country. Currently, the number of primary and secondary school students in China suffering from scoliosis has exceeded 5 million and continues to rise at a rate of approximately 300,000 new cases each year. Scoliosis has now become the third most significant health threat to Chinese children and adolescents, following obesity and myopia.

The World Health Organization pays close attention to human spinal health and designates October 16 of each year as “World Spine Day.”

Authoritative media have also devoted an 8-minute segment to the dangers of scoliosis in adolescents, with a headline that clearly states: “A Deep Dive: The Number of Chinese Primary and Secondary School Students Suffering from Scoliosis Has Exceeded 5 Million—How Can We Prevent and Treat It?”

On August 2, 2021, the Ministry of Education, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the National Health Commission, and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued Document No. 7 [2021] of the Education, Sports, and Arts Department. Article 13 of this document explicitly stipulates the revision of the “Administrative Measures for Health Checkups of Primary and Secondary School Students,” incorporating spinal health checks into the routine health examination items for primary and secondary school students. It also calls for strengthening the management of student health checkups and enhancing the application of data analysis. Furthermore, this indicator has been included in the performance evaluation criteria for officials at multiple levels and among leading cadres.
