  BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) — In recent years, the health risks posed by scoliosis among children and adolescents have drawn increasing attention. In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Huayawei, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, stated that efforts to prevent and control scoliosis among adolescents should be further accelerated.

  As a second-level professor and chief physician at Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital, Hua Yawei has been paying close attention to the issue of scoliosis in children and adolescents through his recent work and research. He explained: “Scoliosis has become the third leading ‘killer’ of children and adolescents’ health in China, following obesity and myopia. Because the disease develops relatively subtly, many adolescents miss the critical window for early intervention and treatment, ultimately having no choice but to undergo surgical correction.”

  Publicly available information indicates that the causes of scoliosis in adolescents include poor posture and idiopathic factors. In particular, prolonged periods of poor posture—such as looking down or bending over while studying at a desk—can easily lead to the development of scoliosis in adolescents.

  The “14th Five-Year Plan for National Health” proposes monitoring and intervening in common student ailments such as scoliosis. Following the release of the “Screening Guidelines for Spinal Deformities in Children and Adolescents,” relevant authorities have accordingly launched preventive and control measures.

  In Hua Yawei’s view, there are still gaps in the prevention and control of scoliosis. For instance, most adolescents and their parents lack awareness of knowledge related to spinal health; scoliosis screening has yet to be fully incorporated into routine student physical examinations; and specialized medical care at county-level healthcare institutions generally falls short of adequate standards.

  In response, Hua Yawei suggests accelerating the implementation of a prevention and control strategy for scoliosis in adolescents—“early diagnosis, early treatment, and early rehabilitation”—and establishing a long-term mechanism for the prevention and management of spinal health. First, conduct screening and educational outreach targeting high-risk and susceptible populations; second, develop a three-tiered management system for spinal health care; and third, establish a big data platform to support scoliosis prevention and control as well as clinical research.

  He specifically emphasized the need to strengthen school-based screening for scoliosis among primary and secondary school students, who are particularly vulnerable to this condition. Based on the screening results, students and their parents can take early preventive measures. Meanwhile, schools should promptly optimize desks and chairs and implement long-term, effective solutions.

  Regarding spinal health diagnosis and treatment, Hua Yawei suggests, on the one hand, innovating the “three-tier hospital—secondary hospital—primary care hospital” model for spinal health care, thereby enabling two-way referrals, resource decentralization, vertical collaboration, and joint discipline development. On the other hand, he advocates establishing a comprehensive care service system that spans “school entry—hospital setting—home,” creating a new closed-loop system for full-course health management integrating “screening—education—treatment—rehabilitation—follow-up,” and extending spinal rehabilitation services to communities and home settings.

  Hua Yawei also suggested strengthening the development of specialized institutions for spinal health and cultivating professional talent, and supporting comprehensive hospitals that meet the necessary conditions to establish spinal surgery departments. At the same time, leveraging information technologies such as cloud computing, big data, and mobile internet, a big data platform for scoliosis should be established to provide data support for formulating prevention and control strategies for adolescent scoliosis and accelerate the translation of scientific research findings into practical applications.
