Analysis of the Current Status of Adolescent Scoliosis in China

Time:

2025-03-04

  I. Data Scale and Growth Trends

  The patient base is huge.

The number of Chinese primary and secondary school students suffering from scoliosis has exceeded 5 million, with approximately 300,000 new cases reported each year.

  Disease Ranking

Scoliosis has become the third leading health threat to adolescents, following obesity and myopia.

  II. Incidence and High-Risk Populations

  Incidence rate

The prevalence of scoliosis among adolescents is approximately 3% to 5%, and some studies indicate that the overall detection rate of spinal abnormalities can be as high as 22.9%.

  High-risk age

It commonly occurs during the adolescent growth period, between the ages of 10 and 16, with a higher proportion of female patients than male patients.

  III. Health Hazards and Complications

  Physiological effects

Physical deformities: Postural issues such as uneven shoulder heights, a hunched back, and pelvic tilt.

Organ compression: Severe scoliosis can compress the heart and lungs, leading to restricted respiratory function or spinal cord nerve damage.

Movement disorders: Accompanied by muscle tone imbalance, chronic pain, and even impaired mobility of the lower limbs.

  Psychological and Social Impacts

Abnormal body posture can easily trigger psychological issues such as low self-esteem and anxiety in adolescents, interfering with their normal social interactions and studies.

IV. Challenges in Screening and Prevention/Control

  Early-stage concealment is strong.

Patients with mild symptoms often exhibit no obvious signs, leading parents and patients to mistakenly attribute the condition to “hunchback” or “poor posture,” thereby delaying timely intervention.

  Insufficient public awareness

Only 30% of parents understand the seriousness of scoliosis, and the primary healthcare screening system remains imperfect.

  V. Current Status and Challenges in Prevention and Control

  Policy Response

Pilot spinal health screenings are being conducted in some regions, but a nationwide early-screening system has yet to achieve full coverage.

  Treatment gap

Patients with moderate to severe conditions require bracing or surgical correction; however, specialized medical resources are unevenly distributed, and primary care facilities have limited diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

  Summary

The issue of scoliosis among Chinese adolescents is characterized by high incidence, younger age of onset, and strong concealment. There is an urgent need to strengthen public education, improve screening mechanisms, and enhance the capacity of primary-level medical care.
